  1. Letter from the Director

  2. Greetings

Welcome to the first issue of Informit Bulletin for 2009. It has been a most bittersweet start to the year. For RMIT Publishing the 2008 financial results were confirmed in February as the most successful year to date. This was in part due to the continued growth of the Informit Media databases and the e-Library Engineering Collection, as well as the newly launched e-Library Business Collection. On behalf of RMIT Publishing, I wish to extend sincere thanks to you, our customers, who contributed to this success.

We look forward to continuing our long collaboration. February also brought Australia's worst natural disaster with the bush fires so close to RMIT Publishing's Melbourne base. It's hard to comprehend the scale of the trauma and each of us in our own way has tried to assist, as I'm sure many of you have too. It's immensely gratifying to see such generosity of spirit from all Australians (and from the rest of the world) and the fortitude from those affected is truly humbling. I aspire to become such an admirable Australian. On a more cheerful note, I wish to welcome on board three new staff:

Erica Maxwell joined as Sales & Support Manager on 9th January 2009. Erica heads the combined sales and customer service team. She may be known to many of you from her earlier days in the library world, with GEAC and latterly with OCLC. Elsewhere in this Bulletin, Erica announces the Sales Executives now responsible for various ANZ market sectors.

Non Jenkins joined as Marketing Executive on 9th February 2009 and comes directly from the UK where she worked for many years in library marketing with OUP. Welsh by birth (and by accent!), we now include heritage from all parts of the UK as well as Greece, India, China and a wee bit of New Zealand. This new look Bulletin is one of Non's immediate improvements to the business and we hope you like it.

Andrea Davison joined on 8th December 2008 as part-time Admin Assistant in the Commissioning team. Andrea has the important role of administering royalty payments to Informit content providers. She can be contacted on Mondays and Tuesdays at andrea.davison@rmit.edu.au for any royalty related queries.

We are also in the process of recruiting for two more part-time roles: Research Analyst and part-time Commissioning Editor.

Other good news from recent months is two RMIT Publishing products were nominated for excellence awards. In November 2008, TVNews – one of the Informit Media databases – won the VALA Award while at the Information Online conference dinner in Sydney in January, the e-Library Engineering Collection was short-listed for the ALIA IOG Excellence Award, thanks to Elena Evendenskaia from Engineers Australia for nominating it. We didn't win this one but are proud to have partnered with Elena and Engineers Australia to bring this product to fruition. More details follow below  in 'News and events'.

Information Online was a great opportunity to meet so many of our customers and business partners. The next major conference we will attend is Educause Australasia, 3-6 May, in Perth where one of my colleagues is presenting a paper in conjunction with Swinburne University of Technology. See below for other events where RMIT Publishing will have a presence.

As always, we welcome your feedback about anything we do.

    Best regards
    Heather Crosbie

  3. Informit e-Library Update

  4. RMIT Publishing continues to actively source new journal content for Informit e-Library. In 2008 we added over 200 new titles and 2009 promises even more. The Humanities and Social Sciences and Engineering Collections maintain their position as the premiere collections of cover-to-cover Australian research in their respective fields and the Informit e-Library Business Collection is steadily building a similar reputation. As well as our commitment to journals published in Australia, we have continued with our recent focus to include journals from New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific region.

New Zealand based journals to appear shortly in Informit e-Library include:

    • Victoria University Law Review
    • New Zealand Language Teacher
    • New Zealand Journal of Public & International Law
    • New Zealand Journal of Educational Studies
    • New Zealand Journal of Medical Laboratory Science
    • New Zealand Journal of Outdoor Education
    • New Zealand English Journal
    • New Zealand Sociology

We continue to commission and partner with publishers for content in these key subject areas:

    • Accounting & taxation
    • Agriculture
    • Asia-Pacific studies
    • Business & management
    • Economics & finance
    • Engineering
    • Environment and natural resources
    • Health, allied health & nursing
    • Indigenous studies
    • Law & criminology

If there are particular journals that you would like to see added to Informit e-Library we welcome these suggestions. We also welcome submissions from organisations who might wish to publish or partner with us. Please contact Kevin Ormsby, Publishing Manager (kevin.ormsby@rmit.edu.au) to discuss the many ways we can work with your organisation to deliver your content via the Informit platform.

  5. RMIT Publishing Journal Program Update

  6. Creative Approaches to Research has followed up its recent inaugural edition with a diverse range of articles introduced by discipline-defining autoethnographers Carolyn Ellis and Art Bochner. The current issue explores a number of creative research methodologies including:

    • the value of comedy in autoethnography
    • writing poetry to reinterpret one's research
    • the use of mandalas as an artistic therapeutic device

RMIT Publishing has also recently published new issues of International Journal of e-Business Management, Qualitative Research Journal and Journal of Human Security.

The current issue of International Journal of e-Business Management includes the results of three research projects:

    • B2C online pricing practices and the impact upon reputation and e-consumer trust
    • the links between the expectations of relationship marketing and the reality of electronic-CRM
    • a new paradigm in product quality improvement

The current issue of Qualitative Research Journal includes articles which:

    • use anecdotes and other dialogues to inform organisational change and research
    • provide teaching-focussed assessments of qualitative research software
    • represent the best papers from the latest Association of Qualitative Research conference

  7. System Developments

  8. Informit v3.3
The Informit v3.3 interface has just been released and includes many enhancements to make life easier, particularly for administrators.

    • A new 'Custom Database' screen has been added to allow customers to prioritise the databases they wish to view at the top of the Databases screen.
    • Referring URL authentication has been enhanced to allow for more than one referring URL. For those customers who have multiple entry points to access Informit, (e.g. an Intranet plus EBSCO's A to Z/SerialsSolutions 360) you can now use Referring URL authentication from any source.
    • More OpenURL options have been added to allow customers to completely block OpenURL links from appearing when external full text is already available in the record. A database can also now completely be excluded from the OpenURL linking process, if requested. OpenURL links for Informit Media databases, such as TVNews have been improved through modifications to the 'title' metadata, which allow for better matches into library catalogues.
    • Table of Contents RSS feeds are now available for each journal and replace the current Issue Feeds for Journals. RMIT Publishing's recommended method of subscribing to RSS feeds from Informit is to use a built in RSS reader on your desktop such as the one in Internet Explorer 7 or 'Live Bookmarks' within Firefox. Many other add-in/plug-in products that read RSS are also available. Web feed aggregators such as Google Reader will only be able to retrieve freely available metadata, (e.g. from Informit e-Library Collections) but not paid subscription content, such as Plus Text databases.

    More Email Alerts now available
The search alerts functionality has been extended to cover new databases. Alerts may be created for any search against any alert enabled database and saved on Informit for 3, 6 or 12 months. As new records are added to any database specified in an alert, Informit will automatically email records that match your saved search query.

    Alerts are now available for:

    • A+ Education
    • AGIS Plus Text
    • Australian Public Affairs – Plus Text
    • Meditext
    • Informit e-Library – Business Collection
    • Informit e-Library – Engineering Collection
    • Informit e-Library – Humanities and Social Sciences Collection
    • RequestTV TVNews

    Improved Usage Statistic Reports
It is now possible to run reports for a full 12 month period. Previously run reports are also saved on the server and can be accessed from the links provided within the statistics page on Informit Admin. For those customers who have a subscription to the TVNews database, a report has been added to allow you see which videos have been copied under your Screenrights agreement.

    TVNews – Catalogue Records
Add brief TVNews records to your library catalogue by downloading the CSV (comma delimited file) of titles and publication information. This file is available via the Informit website: http://www.informit.com.au/programs-media_TVNEWS.html

  10. Awards and recognition for two Informit products

RMIT Publishing is delighted to have received high praise for two Informit products from two of Australia's most respected library associations. In November 2008, Informit TV News was named as the winner of the 2008 VALA Award, an award made biennially and presented to the Australian library or information centre judged to have made the most innovative use of information technology during the previous two years. Four products were nominated for the award in recognition for having made "a significant contribution to service delivery for their organisations and having a significant impact upon their clients". The New Year brought more good news with Elena Vvedenskaia , Library Manager for Engineers Australia being nominated for the ALIA IOG Excellence Award for innovation in performance by an information professional, for her work in providing content for the Informit e-Library Engineering Collection. The collection, which comprises more than 17,000 technical papers, was created in early 2007 when Engineers Australia (EA) joined forces with RMIT Publishing to transform its hard-copy collection into an instantly searchable electronic resource, accessible worldwide via Informit e-Library.
