Informit TVNews hits 200,000 records
15 July 2010
TVNews, one of over 70 online research databases produced by RMIT Publishing under the Informit brand, has today reached 200,000 news items.
The first database of its kind, TVNews was first launched in 2007 and won the VALA 2008 award for 'most innovative use of information technology'. For educators and students alike, TVNews is a central source of relevant and comprehensive news and current affairs from all free-to-air Australian televisions networks.
Christopher Dawkins from the Australian Defence Force Academy (University of New South Wales) commented, "TVNews is a service that we would be hard pressed to do without. We love the fact that our teaching staff can call up a program from TVNews in one of our lecture theatres and typically have it playing for the students in a matter of seconds. We can have even the largest documentary program up and playing within one minute."
The multidisciplinary nature of news means that users across a wide variety of disciplines are seeing the benefits of the TVNews database – including English as a second language, journalism, politics, sociology, business, health and law. "Subscribing to TVNews has been one of the best investments our college has made" says Lyn Lawrence, Teacher Librarian at The Cathedral College, Rockhampton. "It is this type of quality product that students find relevant, current and it stimulates a great deal of discussion and thinking. Recently our Senior Legal Studies students were researching a wide range of controversial issues and linking them to the legislation that already exists in Queensland. They used TVNews extensively to retrieve resources for their research."
With coverage dating back to 2007, many librarians and teaching staff have also flagged the value of being able to access older news. The archival nature ensures that students can research a topic from both a current and over time perspective. The ability to search a topic across programs supports the teaching of evaluation skills and critical literacy.
TVNews makes it easy to search for stories of interest across all programs, the results take you directly to the item level, with the option to play immediately or save locally for later use. Daily content updates allow you to keep up with the latest news. Items range from 30 second video clips to one-hour documentaries, each with their own detailed abstract and citation details.
TVNews is available to Screenrights member organisations within Australia. For more information or to request a free trial, go to
